Water sports

Tauranga is the water sports capital of the North Island’s east coast and the perfect place to enjoy some water activities. Enjoy surfing and kite surfing at Mount Maunganui surf beach. If you’ve always wanted to learn, take a surfing lesson at the legendary Tay Street area of the beach. Take a kayak out in the harbour, for a leisurely paddle and make your way out to Matakana Island, or out through to the open ocean, where you might spot a dolphin pod splashing about in the waves. Action Adventure

For the adventurous, there’s skydiving, 12,000 feet in the air, where you’ll get views from Mount Ruapehu to the East Cape. Or create amazing memories, with a scenic flight over the live volcano, White Island.

For some land based action, Tauranga is home to the world-wide land yacht phenomenon, Blokart. Master the skill of sailing your way around the racing track. Spring Loaded Fun Park, just south of Tauranga is also great fun and a great family attraction. Take a ride on a Mud Bug for some muddy fun or take a jet boat ride down the Kaituna River.

Festivals

Around Easter time, Tauranga hosts New Zealand’s largest Jazz Festival. This year the festival presented over 20 bands on more than 7 stages. This is an exciting event for anyone with a love of music. The 2010 National Jazz Festival was great fun!

The Garden and Art Fest is the next big festival for the Bay in the first week of November this year. A fabulous experience with over 100 private gardens to visit and in each an amazing art exhibition to see. Beach and Bush Walks

The most popular walk in the area is around the base track or up the summit track of Mauao (Mount Maunganui). Mount Maunganui, the landmark volcanic peak at the Tauranga harbour entrance, offers spectacular sea views, and views of Tauranga City. This is a great thing to see and do for the whole family, in the Tauranga area. There are also many beautiful parks and reserves - The Katikati Bird Gardens, quirky Te Puna Quarry Park or the McLaren Falls Park, with lakes, bush rock-pools and waterfalls. The district will surprise you with the choice of superb hot pools. They range from the well known Mount Saltwater Hot Pools, the only salt water hot pools in the Southern Hemisphere, to a selection of secluded pools hidden away in idyllic country settings.
